Artist Bio

Ella Kunwar is a London-based sculptural artist working predominantly with yarn and fabric. Through these materials she explores ideas of identity, sexuality, the female body and motherhood. Repetitive movements are central to the artist’s process, which involves using both weaving and wrapping techniques to create non-figurative self-portraits.

Drawn to body parts and bodily functions Kunwar’s work often contains personal measurements that allow the viewer to anchor themselves within the universal, while exploring human emotion and experience. In her piece Postpartum, the weight, height and circumference of the work relate directly to Kunwar’s experience of postpartum haemorrhage. Through removing the female figure from her portraits the artist hopes to provide a space focused on, but not confined by the female form, offering a way to explore unspoken experiences and emotions.

Kunwar’s work Postpartum is currently on display in the Royal Academy of Arts 2024 Summer exhibition. For more information please contact ellakunwarart@gmail.com
